FAQs

Granada, Spain, is best known for the Alhambra, a breathtaking palace and fortress complex that stands as one of the most significant and well-preserved examples of Islamic architecture in Europe. Its intricate details, stunning gardens and history attract millions of visitors each year, making it a UNESCO World Heritage site and a symbol of the city’s Moorish past.

No, Granda is not one of the largest cities in the country by population. Compared to metropolises like Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Seville, Granada has a considerably smaller population. It typically ranks somewhere around the 20th largest city in Spain.

Packing for a trip to Granada depends on the time of year you’re visiting. Generally, comfortable walking shoes are a must, as you’ll be exploring the city’s historic neighborhoods and the Alhambra. If you’re visiting during the warmer months (roughly May to September), pack light, breathable clothing like cotton and linen, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the Andalusian sun. Evenings can get cooler, so a light jacket or sweater is advisable. For the cooler months (roughly November to March), pack layers, including warmer jackets, sweaters, scarves and gloves, as temperatures can drop, especially in the evenings and in the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains.

The best months to visit Granada are generally April, May and September. During these spring and early autumn months, you’ll experience pleasant temperatures, typically ranging from the mid-60s to low 80s Fahrenheit (around 18-27°C), making it ideal for exploring the city’s attractions on foot without the intense heat of summer or the chill of winter nights.

To truly experience the magic of Granada, we would recommend spending at least three full days. This allows you ample time to explore the magnificent Alhambra and its Generalife gardens at a relaxed pace, wander through the enchanting Albaicín district with its stunning views and immerse yourself in the passionate atmosphere of a flamenco show in Sacromonte. You’ll also have the chance to savor the city’s vibrant tapas culture, visit the impressive Granada Cathedral and Royal Chapel, and perhaps even take a day trip to the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains if you have the time and inclination.

The Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport (GRX) is situated approximately 17 kilometers (about 10 miles) northwest of Granada’s city center. Depending on traffic conditions, the journey to the city center by car or taxi typically takes around 20 to 30 minutes. There is also a regular bus service that connects the airport to various points in the city center, with a journey time of around 45 to 60 minutes.

Walking is great for the center and Albaicín. Buses are efficient and cheap for reaching attractions on hills like the Alhambra. Taxis are convenient. The tourist train offers a scenic route to the Alhambra. While Granada has a metro, buses and walking are often better for historical sites. Combining these methods is usually the best approach.

Granada is best known for its vibrant tapas culture, where many bars offer a complimentary tapa with each drink ordered, making it a social and affordable way to sample local flavors.

To avoid the largest crowds at Granada’s popular attractions, especially the Alhambra, strategic planning is key. Booking your Alhambra tickets well in advance, ideally online and for the earliest entry slot available, is highly recommended. Visiting during the off-season (late fall, winter or early spring) can also significantly reduce the number of tourists. If your schedule allows, consider visiting midweek rather than on weekends. Crown Tours also offers small group tours with as few as 10 people, if you’d like that extra attention and time with your tour guide!

The most popular sites for tours in Granada often revolve around its rich history and stunning architecture. The Alhambra and its Nasrid Palaces, along with the serene Generalife Gardens, consistently top the list, drawing visitors eager to explore the pinnacle of Moorish art and history. Guided tours of this UNESCO World Heritage site provide invaluable context and access to restricted areas.

Granada’s top attractions include the stunning Alhambra palace and fortress, its beautiful Generalife gardens, the impressive Granada Cathedral and adjacent Royal Chapel, the historic Albaicín Arab quarter with its Alhambra views, and the vibrant flamenco shows in Sacromonte. These sites showcase Granada’s rich Moorish and Christian heritage.

Great day trips from Granada include the mountain villages of the Alpujarras, the stunning Sierra Nevada National Park and the historic cities of Córdoba and Seville. You can also head to Costa Tropical for beaches, explore the dramatic clifftop town of Ronda, visit the coastal city of Málaga, discover the Baroque beauty of Priego de Córdoba or see the striking hilltop church in Montefrío. Options for getting there include organized tours, rental cars, and public transport.

Great tours for kids in Granada include family-friendly Alhambra tours with storytelling and games, engaging walking tours of Albaicín and Sacromonte, the convenient Granada City Tour tourist train, and a visit to the interactive Science Park. Consider a family-friendly flamenco show or, for older kids, Segway or e-bike tours. Private tours offer a personalized experience. Look for tours tailored to children’s ages and interests, and book in advance, especially for the Alhambra.

Yes, most restaurants in Granada are open on Sundays, especially for lunch in tourist areas. For attractions: the Alhambra and Generalife are open daily. The Granada Cathedral usually opens for visits in the afternoon on Sundays.
