FAQs

The Duomo, formally known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, has a rich history dating back to its inception in 1296. Designed in the Gothic style by Arnolfo di Cambio, it was constructed on the site of the older church of Santa Reparata. The iconic dome, engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi, was completed in 1436 and is considered a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. The cathedral has since become a symbol of Florence’s artistic and cultural heritage.

The Duomo is best known for its massive dome, which remains one of the largest in the world. Its intricate façade, decorated with white, green, and pink marble, and breathtaking interior frescoes by Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari, make it a timeless marvel.

The best time to visit The Duomo is during the spring (April to June) or fall (September to October) when the weather is pleasant, and crowds are more manageable. Early mornings or weekdays are also ideal times to avoid long lines.

The Duomo is centrally located in Florence and is easily accessible by foot if you’re in the city center. For visitors arriving from elsewhere, taking a bus or train to Santa Maria Novella Station and walking to the cathedral is a convenient option.

The Duomo is situated in Piazza del Duomo in the heart of Florence, surrounded by other historic landmarks like the Baptistery of San Giovanni and Giotto’s Campanile.

While a guide is not required, having one can enhance your experience by providing detailed insights into the history, architecture, and artwork within the cathedral. This guided tour provides exclusive access to areas where you would otherwise never be able to see in person!

The Florence Duomo’s architecture is a masterpiece of engineering and artistry. Brunelleschi’s dome is an architectural marvel with its double-shell design. The detailed mosaics, frescoes, and carvings on the façade and interior, along with the use of vibrant marble and the awe-inspiring fresco of the Last Judgment in the dome, create an unparalleled visual experience.

The best time to visit the Florence Duomo is early in the morning, just after it opens, or later in the afternoon to avoid peak crowds. Weekdays are usually less crowded than weekends or holidays, so plan accordingly for a more serene experience.

Photography is allowed inside The Duomo, but flash and tripods are prohibited. For the best photo opportunities, head to the dome’s climb for panoramic shots of Florence’s skyline or capture the intricate details of the facade from the Piazza del Duomo.

You’re in the right place. You can purchase tickets to our Exclusive VIP Duomo Tour, which includes a dome climb and access to the Secret Terraces, directly on this page, or call our Crown Tours office for additional assistance! Please note, due to the exclusivity of this tour, there is very limited availability, so reserve in advance!

While there is no strict time limit for most parts of the Duomo, pacing yourself will help you make the most of your visit. However, timed entries apply when climbing the dome, so it’s best to keep track of your schedule.

Key highlights include the stunning frescoes of the Last Judgment painted by Vasari and Zuccari in the dome, the intricate stained glass windows, and the marble floor designs. Don’t miss the crypt of Santa Reparata, which holds the remains of the ancient basilica.

To climb the dome, you’ll need a specific ticket that includes entry to the dome ascent. The climb involves 463 steps and offers unmatched views of Florence at the top. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, as the climb can be steep and narrow at certain points.

Yes, small bags are allowed inside the Duomo. However, larger bags, backpacks, and luggage are not permitted and may need to be stored in designated areas or lockers outside the cathedral.

Most likely, no. Due to the exclusivity of this tour, there is very limited availability. It is highly recommended to book your tickets in advance online to avoid long lines and ensure your preferred time slot.

Bringing food or drinks inside the Duomo is prohibited. Visitors are advised to finish any snacks or beverages before entering the premises to maintain the sacred and clean environment of the cathedral.

You will receive detailed communications from Crown Tours with all the details you will need once you have booked your ticket, including your meeting point. It can also be found on this page on both the “Itinerary” and “Map It” tabs.

The Duomo is open regardless of most weather conditions. However, access to certain areas, such as rooftops or terraces, may be temporarily restricted in the event of severe weather like heavy rain or thunderstorms.

The Duomo is accessible to individuals with limited mobility, including ramps and elevators in specific areas. However, sections such as the rooftop or bell tower require climbing steep and narrow stairs and are not suitable for those with mobility challenges. We do not recommend this tour for any visitors with claustrophobia, vertigo or other anxieties around small spaces, steep climbs, or heights. It’s advised to inform your tour provider in advance of any required accommodations.
