The three main Colosseum ticket levels differ in how deep into the monument you go. The Standard ticket keeps you on the general visitor levels. Full Experience Arena adds the reconstructed arena floor. Full Experience Underground adds the corridors beneath that floor. Each one also carries a different time limit inside the Colosseum and a different validity window, details that matter as much as the sightseeing itself when you’re planning a day in Rome.

What does a standard Colosseum ticket include?

The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill ticket covers the Colosseum’s first and second levels, its panoramic terraces, and the Colosseum Museum, plus the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. According to the official ticketing page, the permanence period inside the Colosseum on this ticket is 75 minutes. The Roman Forum-Palatine portion is a separate entrance, usable within 24 hours before or after your booked Colosseum time, not a fixed joint slot. This ticket does not include the arena floor or the underground; for either of those, you need one of the Full Experience tickets below.

What does Colosseum Arena Floor access add?

Full Experience Arena covers everything in the Standard ticket plus the arena floor itself. Standing there gives you the reverse view of a normal visit, looking up at the spectator levels and down into the exposed underground beneath the reconstructed floor. This ticket is valid for 2 consecutive days, with one Colosseum entrance at your booked time and one entrance to the Roman Forum-Palatine SUPER Sites on the day before or after, and the permanence period inside the Colosseum extends to 90 minutes. It’s the standard upgrade for seeing the Colosseum from the arena rather than only from the stands.

What does the Colosseum Underground add?

Full Experience Underground is the deepest of the three: it includes the arena floor and the underground corridors and chambers beneath it, where the mechanics of the ancient spectacles animal lifts, staging, storage were organized. Along with the Colosseum Museum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, and SUPER Sites, this ticket is valid for 2 consecutive days with up to 90 minutes allocated inside the Colosseum. It’s the option for visitors who want to see what happened below the arena, not just on it.

Do you need a guided tour?

Not necessarily. If you already know the history of the Colosseum and the Roman Empire or would rather explore at your own pace, you can opt for a self-guided visit.

Hiring a guide is the ideal choice if it is your first time in Rome, as it allows you to optimize every minute of your visit while bringing the city’s history to life with real stories rather than reading plaque after plaque.

Crown Tours runs guided experiences across all three ticket levels Standard, Full Experience Arena, and Full Experience Underground so choosing a guide doesn’t have to decide which ticket you book.

Ready to Choose Your Colosseum Experience?

Now that you know the difference, the best choice depends on how deeply you want to explore the Colosseum. Crown Tours offers guided experiences for all three options, so you can choose the access that best matches your visit:

FAQ

Underground access is limited and sells out often. Full Experience Arena is the closest alternative: it doesn’t include the underground corridors themselves, but it does give you views down into the underground from the arena floor above.

They’re easy to confuse but cover different ground. Full Experience Arena includes the Colosseum’s general levels plus the arena floor, over 2 days. The 24h Only Arena ticket is arena-floor-only, it does not include the general visitor levels at all, and the arena-floor visit itself runs about 20 minutes. If you want the full circuit and the arena in one ticket, Full Experience Arena is the one; 24h Only Arena is a narrower, standalone product.

A few others worth knowing: Full Experience Attic adds the intermediate gallery and third-level attic, reached by steep stairs or a panoramic lift, without arena or underground access. Forum Pass SUPER covers the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, Imperial Fora, and SUPER Sites with no Colosseum entry at all. Each serves a different visit, so the right one depends on what you actually want to see.

The SUPER Sites are seven areas within the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill not included on every ticket: the Palatine Museum’s lower floor, the House of Augustus, the House of Livia, the Aula Isiaca and Loggia Mattei, the Domus Tiberiana exhibition rooms, Santa Maria Antiqua, and the Horrea Piperataria. They’re included with the Forum Pass SUPER and with any Full Experience ticket.

As early as your travel dates are confirmed, especially for Arena or Underground access, both have limited daily availability and popular dates sell out.

No. The Standard ticket doesn’t include the arena floor or the underground; you need a Full Experience Arena or Full Experience Underground ticket, or a guided tour built around one of those.

Yes, within limits. Your Roman Forum-Palatine entry is a separate booking from your Colosseum entry, not a fixed joint slot. On the Standard ticket it’s usable within 24 hours before or after your Colosseum time; on the two-day Full Experience tickets, it’s usable the day before or the day after. It isn’t open at any time you like, your Colosseum entry, by contrast, is fixed to the exact slot you book and is the stricter of the two.
